Amsterdam, 21 January 2020 – Nissan, TenneT and Envision are joining forces in a new step towards more sustainable mobility and energy. As part of the collaboration, Nissan will install and operate at its Amsterdam facility vehicle to grid chargers, smart chargers and stationary storage using 2nd life batteries. All those assets will be integrated in Envision Digital platform, EnOS.

As Transmission System Operator (TSO), TenneT is responsible for the balance between supply and demand on the electrical grid, the so-called grid-balancing. Apart from the increase of renewable energy, the future will hold fewer available conventional power stations to provide the required flexibility. TenneT is actively working on innovation and application of new (decentralised) sources that offer flexibility, such as batteries, wind and solar energy, industrial installations or cogeneration. These sources can be utilized via energy supplier or so-called ‘aggregators’ combined with digital technology. This way, even consumers can directly participate in the energy balancing market and contribute to the energy transition.

With this project Nissan opens the way for EV owners to join a crowd balancing platform. This breakthrough initiative is paving the way for decentralised energy markets, in which each customer is actively participating in the wider deployment of renewable energy sources while reducing their electricity bills at the same time.

In addition and thanks to the 3MW of solar panels installation at the Nissan facility, the electric vehicles and stationary batteries on site will be able to store energy during peaks in generation and later feed the energy to the facility or to the grid when demand is peaking.

Francisco Carranza, Director Nissan Energy Services: ‘Balancing energy supply and demand – in return for a compensation – is one of the spearheads of the collaboration between Nissan, TenneT and Envision. It is a scalable system. So cars virtually work together to balance the grid. Combined with stationary storage it provides flexibility – one of the biggest challenges for our grid operators.’

Bi-directional charging point
Nissan has already presented similar V2G projects with electric Nissans in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark.To be able to return power to the grid, the electric Nissan has to be connected to a bi-directional charger which converts the DC power into AC power. With a dedicated app, the user can define when and how much power the battery may return and when the car should be charged again.

The storage and return of energy is compensated. Robbert Monteban, Director Energy Services Nissan Benelux: ‘This development is important for the flexible energy market and is profitable, making both energy storage and electric driving an interesting option for a growing number of drivers. They can choose for more sustainable mobility and contribute to the upcoming sustainable energy movement. Plus, vehicle owners stay in control at all times. From earlier projects we have learned that this demands very little of the battery – so the influence on battery life is minimal.’
