Electric vehicles and batteries key to growth sustainable energy in The Netherlands
Nissan, TenneT and Envision contribute to more sustainable energy and mobility with crowd balancing platform

  • Nissan Electric Vehicle drivers could earn money by participating in TenneT’s energy balancing market
  • First 250 kW of power available to be installed in Nissan Motor Parts Center in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, 21 January 2020 – Nissan, TenneT and Envision are joining forces in a new step towards more sustainable mobility and energy. As part of the collaboration, Nissan will install and operate at its Amsterdam facility vehicle to grid chargers, smart chargers and stationary storage using 2nd life batteries. All those assets will be integrated in Envision Digital platform, EnOS.

As Transmission System Operator (TSO), TenneT is responsible for the balance between supply and demand on the electrical grid, the so-called grid-balancing. Apart from the increase of renewable energy, the future will hold fewer available conventional power stations to provide the required flexibility. TenneT is actively working on innovation and application of new (decentralised) sources that offer flexibility, such as batteries, wind and solar energy, industrial installations or cogeneration. These sources can be utilized via energy supplier or so-called ‘aggregators’ combined with digital technology. This way, even consumers can directly participate in the energy balancing market and contribute to the energy transition.

With this project Nissan opens the way for EV owners to join a crowd balancing platform. This breakthrough initiative is paving the way for decentralised energy markets, in which each customer is actively participating in the wider deployment of renewable energy sources while reducing their electricity bills at the same time.

In addition and thanks to the 3MW of solar panels installation at the Nissan facility, the electric vehicles and stationary batteries on site will be able to store energy during peaks in generation and later feed the energy to the facility or to the grid when demand is peaking.

Francisco Carranza, Director Nissan Energy Services: ‘Balancing energy supply and demand – in return for a compensation – is one of the spearheads of the collaboration between Nissan, TenneT and Envision. It is a scalable system. So cars virtually work together to balance the grid. Combined with stationary storage it provides flexibility – one of the biggest challenges for our grid operators.’

Bi-directional charging point
Nissan has already presented similar V2G projects with electric Nissans in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark. To be able to return power to the grid, the electric Nissan has to be connected to a bi-directional charger which converts the DC power into AC power. With a dedicated app, the user can define when and how much power the battery may return and when the car should be charged again.

The storage and return of energy is compensated. Robbert Monteban, Director Energy Services Nissan Benelux: ‘This development is important for the flexible energy market and is profitable, making both energy storage and electric driving an interesting option for a growing number of drivers. They can choose for more sustainable mobility and contribute to the upcoming sustainable energy movement. Plus, vehicle owners stay in control at all times. From earlier projects we have learned that this demands very little of the battery – so the influence on battery life is minimal.’

Sylvie Ouziel, International President of Envision Digital said: “We are pleased to be partnering Nissan on its V2X Project as the demand for sustainable energy in the mobility industry increases. As the global energy landscape evolves, our collaboration with Nissan and TenneT is a great example of how Envision Digital’s EnOS™, a world-class AIoT operating system, is accelerating energy transition around the world. This partnership reinforces our global market leadership and technology in the field of sustainable mobility and brings us one step closer to creating a more sustainable world.”Nissan Netherlands has installed a charging bay including two bi-directional chargers which can charge and discharge up to 10 kW. The possibilities of and the collective plans for the Crowd Balancing Platform are what Nissan and TenneT will be discussed on 21 January at the V2X seminar in Rotterdam. The event is organised by EVConsult.

About the partners:

TenneT

TenneT is a leading European network operator (Transmission System Operator, TSO) with its most important activities in the Netherlands and Germany. With more than 23,000 kilometres of high-voltage connections, TenneT provides a reliable and secure electricity supply to the 41 million end users in the Netherlands and Germany.

Envision Digital

Envision Digital is a global AIoT technology leader headquartered in Singapore with over 500 employees across ten offices in China, the Netherlands, France, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. Envision Digital owns EnOS™, the world-class AIoT operating system which currently connects and manages over 63 million smart devices and 120GW of energy assets globally. Its monitoring, advanced analytics, forecasting and optimising applications provide insights to help clients better manage their assets and portfolio performance. Its offering extends to Smart Renewables (Hydro, Solar, Wind); Smart Cities; Smart Buildings; Connected Energy; Smart Plants; and Smart Networks; partnering companies and governments in their digital transformation journey. Envision Digital together with Envision AESC articulates batteries and electromobility solutions (with lithium-ion batteries notably for the Nissan Leaf model) and overall energy orchestration. This orchestration, together with Envision Energy which produces renewable energy (notably as a leading wind turbine producer and operator), closes the energy transition loop. Nissan

Nissan has been manufacturing electric vehicles for a broad audience for over ten years. The expertise acquired has contributed to its vision of an integrated energy and mobility eco-system in which vehicles actively contribute to a more sustainable and stable grid. Nissan has been the first automotive company to realise commercial V2G projects demonstrating how its vision can become a reality. Nissan is also a pioneer when it comes to the reuse of car batteries for sustainable energy storage – like at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
